HOUSTON, TX – The stillness of a Houston neighborhood was shattered in the early hours of Wednesday as a violent family tragedy unfolded, leaving a 71-year-old woman dead and her son facing a murder charge.
Just after 2:30 a.m., police were summoned to a home on Harristown Drive in the city’s south side, responding to a report of an assault. When officers arrived, they discovered Alta Green Veasley suffering from multiple, devastating stab wounds. There was little they could do as she lay gravely wounded; authorities say her injuries included six stab wounds—two each to her heart and face, another to the back of her head, and one more to her right arm.
Despite her critical state, Veasley managed to identify her attacker as her own son, 34-year-old Gerren Miles Crosson, in her final moments. Emergency crews rushed her to a nearby hospital, but their efforts were not enough to save her life. Doctors pronounced her dead soon after her arrival.
Crosson remained at the scene as officers arrived. He was taken into custody without incident and, according to investigators, offered a chilling confession. Authorities report Crosson admitted to the stabbing, stating it was “something I needed to do.” Investigators have not yet indicated what might have motivated such a violent act, nor have they revealed details about the events preceding the attack.
Charging documents show Crosson is being held in the Harris County Jail on $750,000 bond, with a court appearance scheduled for Friday. There is no indication at this time whether he has retained legal representation.
Records reveal this was not the first time police responded to violent incidents involving Crosson and his mother. In 2021, he was accused of attacking Veasley after a dispute over food, allegedly striking her repeatedly in the face. He was arrested and charged with injury to an elderly person in that case, though the charges were later dropped. Additionally, Crosson pleaded guilty to evading police more than a decade ago, in 2010.
Neighbors described a sense of shock and disbelief that such violence could erupt within what had long seemed a quiet home. Many expressed sadness at the loss of Veasley, remembered by some for her kindness and gentle nature.
Authorities have not disclosed if Crosson was under the influence or experiencing mental health issues at the time of the stabbing. The investigation remains open as detectives work to unravel the circumstances leading to the deadly confrontation.
As the community reels from the tragedy, the case stands as a grim reminder of the unpredictable dangers that can lurk behind closed doors, even among family.
