Tragedy: Authorities Identify Victims of Devastating Mass Shooting in Rural Canada

TUMBLER RIDGE, Canada — Authorities have released the names of eight victims, including six children, who lost their lives in a tragic mass shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School on February 10. The incident, which has shocked the rural community, prompted a swift response from law enforcement, leading to a lockdown at the school.

Among the deceased children are 12-year-olds Abel Mwansa, Kylie Smith, Ticaria Lampert, and Zoey Benoit, along with 13-year-old Ezekiel Schofield. Also among the victims is 39-year-old teacher Shannda Aviugana-Durand. Tragically, the shooter, identified as 18-year-old Jesse Van Rootselaar, had earlier killed his stepbrother, 11-year-old Emmett Jacobs, and their mother, 39-year-old Jennifer Jacobs.

Police were dispatched to the school shortly after the incident began, where they activated a “lockdown and secure and hold” procedure as they worked to contain the situation. Sadly, dozens of others were injured during the attack, further escalating the community’s anguish.

Deputy Commissioner Dwayne McDonald of the British Columbia Royal Canadian Mounted Police expressed condolences and highlighted the profound sorrow gripping the community. “We will continue to support the families, respect their wishes, and walk with the community as it begins the long journey toward healing,” he stated.

As citizens grapple with the aftermath of this horrific event, plans for a community vigil are underway. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and opposition leaders have announced their intention to attend the gathering, aiming to show solidarity during this challenging time.

This mass shooting stands as one of the deadliest in Canada’s history, drawing comparison to a 2020 incident in Nova Scotia where a gunman killed 22 individuals. The stark reality of such violence has reignited discussions around gun control and school safety in Canada as communities seek ways to prevent such tragedies.

In the wake of the shooting, Tumbler Ridge and the surrounding areas are coming together, sharing grief and support for the families affected, as they navigate a possible path to recovery and healing.
