ATLANTA, Ga. — Tragedy struck Gwinnett County on Sunday morning as a police officer was killed and another seriously injured during a response to a fraud incident at a local hotel. Officer Pradeep Tamang, age 25, was identified as the officer who lost his life, while Cpl. David Reed sustained serious injuries in the exchange of gunfire.
Authorities reported that the incident unfolded around 7:30 a.m. at a hotel on Park Place Boulevard in Stone Mountain. Officers Tamang and Reed responded to a call regarding a suspected fraud involving a rental agreement. Upon their arrival, they encountered the suspect, 35-year-old Kevin Andrews, inside a room that authorities believe had been rented under false pretenses.
Police Chief J.D. McClure recounted that the officers were invited into the room before the situation escalated. During the encounter, Andrews allegedly drew a firearm and launched an unprovoked attack on the officers. In the ensuing chaos, both officers were struck, but they managed to return fire, injuring Andrews, who is now in stable condition.
Tamang succumbed to his injuries later at the hospital, while Cpl. Reed remains under medical care. The fallen officer, originally from Nepal, joined the Gwinnett County Police Department in spring 2025 and was engaged to be married.
Chief McClure expressed deep sorrow over the loss, affirming that the department remains committed to serving the community despite the tragic incident. “These officers are heroes who bravely face uncertainty every day. Their commitment to public safety is invaluable,” he stated.
The investigation into the incident is being handled by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, and charges against Andrews are expected to be filed soon. Police disclosed that Andrews has a substantial criminal history.
In response to the crisis, Gwinnett County authorities have established a donation platform for those wishing to support the families of the affected officers. Chairwoman Nicole Love Hendrickson urged the community for compassion and unity as they navigate this difficult moment.
Governor Brian Kemp also shared condolences through social media, highlighting the inherent dangers faced by law enforcement officers daily. “Today, we stand with the Gwinnett County Police Department in mourning the loss of a brave officer while praying for another’s swift recovery,” he wrote.
The community is rallying around both officers’ families during this period of grief, reflecting on the sacrifices made by those who serve and protect.
