ATLANTA, Ga. — Tragedy struck the Gwinnett County Police Department when Officer Pradeep Tamang was killed and Cpl. David Reed was seriously injured during a response to a call at a Stone Mountain hotel early Sunday morning.
The incident unfolded around 7:30 a.m. at a hotel on Park Place Boulevard. Officers Tamang, 25, and Reed were investigating a suspected fraudulent rental when they encountered a man, identified as 35-year-old Kevin Andrews, who allegedly opened fire on them. Police Chief J.D. McClure reported that the officers were welcomed into the room, but the situation escalated rapidly when Andrews produced a handgun and fired unprovoked at the officers.
Both officers returned fire, injuring Andrews, who also required medical attention. All three were transported to a local hospital, where Officer Tamang succumbed to his injuries. Cpl. Reed remains hospitalized in serious condition.
Tamang, originally from Nepal, joined the Gwinnett County Police Department in spring 2025 and was engaged to be married. His loss has sparked an overwhelming response from the community and law enforcement officials alike, emphasizing the risks police officers face daily.
Chief McClure addressed the community, stating the department remains committed to maintaining public safety despite this devastating loss. “These officers are heroes. They confront uncertainty every day while providing essential services,” he said, underscoring their dedication.
