Tragedy: Idaho Sniper Wess Roley Ambushes Firefighters, Leaving Two Dead

Coeur d’Alene, Idaho — A sniper identified as Wess Roley has been linked to a tragic incident that resulted in the deaths of two firefighters. The 20-year-old reportedly initiated a brush fire on Canfield Mountain as a trap, ultimately leading to the shootings that claimed the lives of the firefighters and left a third critically injured.

Roley, who was also killed during the incident, resided in Arizona with his mother, Heather Lynn Kuuipo Cuchiara. Public records indicate that he had a close relationship with his mother, who recently celebrated his birthday.

Images of Roley show contrasting appearances; he is depicted in a stern driver’s license photo and in social media posts with long hair that softens his features. Despite his youth, Roley’s actions have raised serious questions about his motivations. Authorities have not disclosed a clear rationale for the shootings, nor have they confirmed whether he was killed by law enforcement or took his own life in the face of capture.

No public social media profiles for Roley have surfaced, and he left no known manifesto outlining his intentions. His father, Jason, lives about an hour away in Priest River, Idaho, and is married to Sara Roley, Wess’s stepmother, with whom he shares two young children.

The violent episode began around 1:21 p.m. when local firefighters responded to the fire. Two of the firefighters from the Coeur d’Alene Fire Department and Kootenai County Fire & Rescue were fatally shot as they approached the scene. The third firefighter sustained serious injuries but is now reported to be stable after surgery.

Firefighters and emergency personnel were left reeling from the incident, forced to combat the ongoing wildfire while mourning the loss of two colleagues in such brutal circumstances. The fire, ignited by Roley’s actions, continues to spread, complicating recovery efforts and casting a shadow over the local community.

As investigators work to uncover additional details surrounding the tragic ambush, they are focusing on the timeline of events and the circumstances leading up to the deadly attack. The community is left grappling with grief while also highlighting the risks emergency responders face daily in serving their towns.
