Miami, Florida — The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office is grappling with the tragic loss of Deputy Devin Jaramillo, who was fatally shot while responding to a crash near Kendall on Friday afternoon. The agency has identified 21-year-old Steven David Rustrian as the suspect in the deadly incident that unfolded shortly before 4 p.m.
According to preliminary reports, Jaramillo arrived at the scene of the crash when a verbal confrontation ensued between him and Rustrian. Miami-Dade Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz revealed that Rustrian physically assaulted the deputy during the altercation, managed to obtain Jaramillo’s firearm, and opened fire, striking him multiple times. Following this confrontation, Rustrian turned the gun on himself, leading to his death.
Bystanders who witnessed the event called 911, prompting emergency responders to rush to the scene and administer first aid to Jaramillo. He was subsequently transported to HCA Florida Kendall Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Sheriff Cordero-Stutz described the incident as unacceptable, emphasizing the need for community support to prevent future tragedies. “Behind this uniform, we are human beings,” she noted, as she remembered Jaramillo not just as a deputy but as a beloved son and friend. Having graduated from the police academy just a few months prior, Jaramillo had a bright future ahead, chosen out of passion for public service, according to the sheriff.
In the aftermath of the shooting, hundreds of first responders from various agencies gathered outside the hospital to honor Jaramillo’s memory. Fire Rescue personnel raised an American flag to accompany the motorcade that transported him to the medical examiner’s office later that evening.
On Saturday, another motorcade escorted Jaramillo from the medical examiner’s office to a local funeral home. While the exact details of memorial services are still pending, the community is coming together in grief and remembrance, recognizing the sacrifice made by the young deputy.
Cordero-Stutz implored the public to keep the agency in their thoughts and prayers, emphasizing the emotional toll such events take not only on law enforcement but also on the families and communities they serve. The sheriff indicated that the coming days will be challenging but vowed to maintain a commitment to public safety in Miami-Dade County.
