Tragedy Strikes: DeKalb County Officer David Rose Killed in Line of Duty During Emory University Shooting

ATLANTA, Ga. — A DeKalb County police officer was killed in the line of duty on Friday, August 8, while responding to a report of an active shooter near Emory University’s Atlanta campus. David Rose, 33, left for work that day to serve his community, but tragically did not return home to his family.

This devastating incident unfolded around 4:50 p.m. near the intersection of Clifton Road and CDC Parkway, where reports of a gunman had prompted a swift police response in the area. The shooting claimed Officer Rose’s life and left the community mourning the loss of a dedicated public servant. His passing has left a wife, three children—one of whom is unborn—and his parents grieving deeply.

DeKalb County CEO Lorraine Cochran-Johnson expressed sorrow for the family’s loss, emphasizing the profound impact of this tragedy on both the immediate family and the larger community. “This evening there’s a wife without a husband and children without their father,” she said.

Rose, who joined the police academy in September 2024, graduated in March and quickly gained recognition for his dedication and professionalism. Before serving with the DeKalb County Police Department, he had a notable background, including four years of service in the United States Marine Corps and prior work as a jailer in Gwinnett County.

The situation escalated as officers responded to the scene at Emory Point, an area bustling with both residential and retail establishments. Law enforcement quickly swarmed the vicinity, where at least four buildings operated by the CDC were struck. Photos shared by employees revealed damage, including bullet holes that underscored the intensity of the day’s events.

The gunman, armed with a long gun, was found deceased on the second floor of a building across from the CDC campus. The circumstances of his death remain unclear; officials have not determined whether he died from police fire or a self-inflicted wound. Additionally, three other firearms were recovered at the scene.

Authorities are still investigating the motive behind the shooting. Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens remarked on the tragedy and indicated that answers are still being sought.

Governor Brian Kemp shared condolences to Officer Rose’s family on social media, highlighting the state’s gratitude for his service. “His memory will not be forgotten,” he wrote, extending thoughts and prayers to those mourning his passing, including fellow officers.

Funeral arrangements for Officer Rose have yet to be made public as the community rallies to honor his sacrifice and support his family during this difficult time.
