Lawrenceville, Georgia — A tragic event unfolded in a quiet Lawrenceville neighborhood early Friday morning, leaving the Indian American community in metro Atlanta in shock after a domestic violence incident resulted in the deaths of four individuals.
On January 23, Vijay Kumar, 51, was arrested and faces multiple murder charges after the shooting at a residence on Brook Ivy Court. Authorities have identified the victims as Kumar’s wife, Meemu Dogra, 43, and her relatives: Gourav Cumar, 33, Nidhi Chander, 37, and Harish Chander, 38, all local residents.
Amidst the chaos, three children aged 7, 10, and 12 were present in the home. Remarkably, the eldest child, who is Kumar and Dogra’s son, managed to contact emergency services from a closet where the siblings hid during the shooting.
The Gwinnett County Police reported that the incident reportedly arose from a dispute between Kumar and Dogra at their residence in Atlanta. The couple later traveled to the Lawrenceville home, where tensions escalated fatally. Officers responded around 2:30 a.m. to reports of gunfire and discovered the victims inside, all appearing to have suffered gunshot wounds.
“This is a heartbreaking situation,” said Corporal Angela Carter of the Gwinnett County Police. “The loss of four lives, especially with children involved, is profoundly tragic.”
Later, police located Kumar hiding nearby, taking him into custody without further incident. His vehicle remained parked at the crime scene. He was charged with four counts of aggravated assault, multiple counts of felony murder and malice murder, and cruelty to children, among other offenses.
