Tragedy: Teen Fatally Shot Day After Graduation due to Unloaded Gun Misunderstanding

Franklin, Tennessee – A tragic incident unfolded in Franklin, Tennessee, when 18-year-old Lily Basil was fatally shot just a day after celebrating her high school graduation. The suspect, Matthew Roufail, also 18, reportedly claimed that he was unaware the gun he used was loaded when the tragic event occurred.

Basil, whose infectious smile was known to light up every room she entered, was struck in the shoulder by a bullet from a rifle and rushed to Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville. Despite efforts to save her, she was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Roufail, believing Basil had been taken to Williamson County Medical Center, encountered the police there instead. He was taken into custody for questioning and subsequently charged with criminal homicide for his role in Basil’s untimely death.

According to reports, Roufail admitted to shooting Basil but maintained that it was accidental, as he mistakenly thought the AR-15-style rifle was unloaded. Witnesses claimed to have seen Roufail shooting Basil with a .22 caliber rifle, which was stored in the trunk of a witness’ car where the teenagers had been hanging out.

The tragic incident occurred just a day after Basil graduated from Page High School in Franklin. The school community mourned the loss of the bright and kind-hearted graduate, describing her as a friend to all and someone whose presence brought warmth to those around her.

As the investigation into the shooting continues, Roufail has since been released on bond. Memorial services are scheduled to honor Basil’s memory, with a funeral planned for Friday morning.

To commemorate Basil’s life and the light she brought to others, community members have been invited to participate in a “Light the Night Memorial” event organized by Page High School. The event encourages individuals to light a candle, luminary, or porch light at sunset on Friday in honor of Basil’s legacy.
