The tragic incident that unfolded on April 29 in Charlotte, North Carolina, resulted in the loss of four law enforcement officers while serving an arrest warrant at a residence. During a press conference on April 30, Chief Jennings identified the fallen officers as CMPD officer Joshua Eyer and three U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force members.

Officer Eyer had served with the CMPD’s North Tryon Division for six years and was a member of the 178th Recruit Class. The other officers who lost their lives were identified as Deputy U.S. Marshal Thomas M. Weeks Jr., and North Carolina Department of Adult Corrections officers Samuel “Sam” Poloche and William “Alden” Elliott. Each of the fallen officers had dedicated years to their respective roles in law enforcement, leaving behind grieving families and loved ones.

The tragic shootout occurred when officers attempted to serve a warrant on a man identified as Terry Clark Hughes Jr., 39. Hughes, who was wanted for possession of a firearm by a felon in Lincoln County, engaged in gunfire with the officers, resulting in his death in the front yard of the residence. Subsequent gunfire from inside the home led to a prolonged standoff, eventually leading to the apprehension of two individuals as persons of interest.

A non-profit organization, Back The Blue NC, initiated a GoFundMe campaign to support the surviving family members of the victims.
