The proceedings took a significant turn early in the day when Judge Sid Harle dismissed the testimony of former Robb Elementary teacher Stephanie Hale, who had returned to the witness stand amid legal concerns. Harle instructed jurors to disregard her statements, expressing appreciation for her courage during the ordeal.
The courtroom was further shaken by the emotional testimony of Emilia Marin, a former staff member at Robb Elementary. Marin, who faced false accusations regarding an open door, refuted those claims as she recounted the chaos surrounding the shooting. The jury listened intently to her 911 call, where her desperate voice prompted a dispatcher to ask how many shots had been fired. With trepidation, Marin reported, “He’s on campus now,” conveying the gravity of the situation as fear enveloped her.
As she recalled the events, Marin visibly struggled, sharing chilling memories of the unending gunfire. “The shots wouldn’t stop. I thought I was going to die,” she said, her voice trembling. Defense attorneys cross-examined her rigorously, probing into the specifics of the incident and the particulars of the doors. Despite their intense questioning, they acknowledged that the failure to secure a particular door was not Marin’s responsibility.
Additional staff members also took the stand, sharing their harrowing experiences. Teacher Lynn Deming described the moment she realized she had been shot when the gunman fired through her classroom window. “He was shooting through the window, and the kids were across,” Deming recalled. In a poignant gesture, she told her students she loved them, hoping those words would be their last memory.
Throughout the day’s proceedings, Gonzales remained largely stoic, a marked contrast to the emotional testimonies of survivors.
