WILMINGTON, Del. — Funeral services have been set for a Delaware State Police corporal who lost his life in a shooting at a Department of Motor Vehicles office just before Christmas. Cpl. Matthew Snook, who was working an overtime shift the day before Christmas Eve, was shot during what has been described as an ambush.
Authorities reported that 44-year-old Rahman Rose approached the reception desk and shot Snook. In a heroic effort, Snook managed to push a nearby employee out of harm’s way before he was struck again. Following the initial shooting, Rose allowed other patrons to exit the DMV before turning his gun on responding officers. A New Castle County police officer ultimately shot Rose through a window as he fired at law enforcement.
Both Snook and Rose were transported to local hospitals, where they were later pronounced dead. Another state trooper sustained a minor injury unrelated to gunfire, while one woman was also treated for a minor injury during the chaotic scene.
Public ceremonies to honor Cpl. Snook’s contributions and sacrifices will take place on January 5 at the Bob Carpenter Center at the University of Delaware. The events will include a public visitation starting at 9 a.m. and extending until 1 p.m., followed by a memorial service. A private burial will occur afterward.
Colleagues and community members have remembered Snook as a dedicated and beloved member of both the state police and the community. The agency reflected on his role, calling him a “respected colleague” who was cherished by all who knew him.
In a fundraising initiative launched to support Snook’s family, the Delaware State Troopers Association described him as a devoted husband and father, noting his steady presence, kindness, and selfless service. Those close to him shared sentiments about his unwavering commitment to the people he loved and served.
The tragic incident has drawn an outpouring of grief and respect from the community, emphasizing the danger and sacrifice inherent in law enforcement work.
