Video of 9-year-old girl killed by shot in the head in the Utah desert with her mother who was arrested for murder

LOMPOC, CA – The search for a missing 9-year-old girl took a tragic turn after her body was discovered in a remote Utah wilderness earlier this month, bringing a somber end to a case that spanned multiple states and left a community in mourning.

Melodee Buzzard, remembered by neighbors as a quiet but joyful child, disappeared in early October during what was supposed to be a cross-country road trip with her mother. Unbeknownst to her loved ones, her life would be cut short far from the home she knew in Lompoc.

Authorities said that Melodee was last seen with her mother, Ashlee Buzzard, near the Utah-Colorado border on October 9. Within days, her mother returned to California alone, and Melodee’s absence was not immediately noticed. The alarm was raised only after her prolonged absence from school caught the attention of the Lompoc Unified School District, prompting them to alert law enforcement.

Detectives visited the Buzzard residence but were unable to account for Melodee’s whereabouts. As investigating deputies pressed for information, they encountered an uncooperative response from Ashlee, sparking further concern for the young girl’s safety.

The search for Melodee continued for several weeks, stretching from the California coast to the canyons of Utah. It came to an end when a couple hiking in Wayne County, Utah, stumbled upon human remains and contacted authorities. DNA testing later confirmed the remains belonged to Melodee.

Investigators determined Melodee had suffered a gunshot wound to the head, with evidence found at the Buzzard home tying the weapon to the crime. The county sheriff described the discovery as devastating for all those who held out hope for Melodee’s safe return.

Ashlee Buzzard, 40, was arrested Tuesday morning following the confirmation of Melodee’s identity. Authorities allege that after leaving California with her daughter, Ashlee attempted to obscure her movements by changing disguises and switching license plates during the return trip. She has been charged with first-degree murder and is currently in custody.

As officials retraced the family’s steps, those who knew Melodee spoke of her resilience. Despite enduring personal hardship—her father having died in an accident when she was a baby—Melodee was said to seek out small joys in her daily life.

Melodee’s home life, according to statements from family members, had been tumultuous. Relatives indicated that child protective services had previously intervened after concerns about her living conditions. Her grandmother, expressing disbelief and sorrow, described the situation inside the home as chaotic, further amplifying the tragedy of Melodee’s death.

Law enforcement leaders acknowledged the profound grief that now weighs on the community, emphasizing that progress toward justice does little to soothe the pain of a life lost too soon.

Authorities continue to piece together the final days of Melodee’s journey and ask anyone with further information to come forward as the investigation remains ongoing.
