Violence: Court Hears Shocking Testimony as Man Sentenced for Strangling Partner Over 40 Times

Christchurch, New Zealand — A man was sentenced to more than three years in prison this week after a court revealed a prolonged history of violent assaults against his partner, which included over 40 instances of strangulation. Benjamin Cudby, whose actions were described as entrenched domestic violence, will face increased scrutiny under new legislation aimed atRepeat offenders after a series of shocking incidents marked by physical aggression and intimidation.

During the sentencing at the Christchurch District Court, Judge Katie Elkin highlighted the severe impact of Cudby’s behavior on the victim, who suffers from a prior brain injury that left her particularly vulnerable. The court was informed of numerous episodes in which Cudby overpowered her, the most harrowing of which involved an incident last June when he wrapped his hands around her throat, resulting in her losing consciousness.

The attacks escalated to the point where the victim, in a moment of desperation, stabbed Cudby in self-defense. Instead of seeking help, he retaliated by pursuing her with a spade, damaging doors in their home before police arrived to intervene. Witnesses corroborated stories of Cudby’s violent outbursts, including accounts of him choking her in front of friends, requiring two individuals to pull him away.

Cudby’s pattern of abuse reportedly began just three months into their relationship and continued for nearly two years, with the judge noting that he was just in his early 20s at the time. The frequency and gravity of his actions led the court to consider both the lasting trauma inflicted on the victim and the need to protect her from further harm.

In addition to physical violence, the court also examined Cudby’s struggles with substance abuse, which included a daily drug habit costing upwards of $200. He was found to be in possession of various illegal substances, including LSD and methamphetamine, raising further concerns regarding his judgment and behavior.

Judge Elkin imposed a sentence of three years and seven months, factoring in Cudby’s guilty plea and lack of prior criminal history. However, his conduct fell under the newly enacted Three Strikes law, warning him that future offenses could result in significantly harsher penalties.

Elkin also ordered a protection order aimed at ensuring the victim’s safety as she begins to navigate her recovery and rebuilding her life post-abuse. “This has had a very big impact on her; she is only 19 and, like you, very young,” the judge remarked during sentencing.

In light of this case, local advocacy groups are reiterating the importance of speaking out against domestic violence. Victims are encouraged to reach out for help through available support services, reminding the community that assistance is just a call or text away.

Authorities continue to emphasize the urgency of addressing domestic violence, underscoring that no one should endure such trauma in silence.
