TUCSON, Ariz. — Authorities are once again investigating a violent incident involving public transit in Tucson, marking the 10th such attack connected to Sun Tran since April. This latest incident occurred at the Laos Transit Center on Sunday, November 30, where a victim sustained serious head injuries.
The Tucson Police Department responded to reports of the assault but did not manage to locate the suspect at the scene. While details regarding the victim’s condition and the suspect remain unavailable, police suspect the attack may have been unprovoked, raising concerns about safety in and around public transit locations.
Since April, there has been a troubling pattern of violent attacks associated with Sun Tran. Among the notable incidents, a 25-year-old man was charged with murder after a fatal hatchet attack in downtown Tucson. The victim of that assault, Jacob Couch, passed away from his injuries shortly after the attack.
On May 12, another incident saw a 42-year-old attack two individuals with a hatchet at a bus stop near Sabino Canyon and Tanque Verde Roads. Such recurring violence has led to rising anxiety among commuters and local residents.
In July, a 19-year-old woman was injured during a knife altercation on a bus at the Ronstadt Center, with a 15-year-old subsequently arrested. A few weeks after that, police apprehended a woman alleged to have stabbed a man at the Laos Transit Center, reflecting a series of violent events concentrated in the area.
August continued the trend, witnessing stabbings at both the Ronstadt Center and the Laos Transit Center. On September 9, a Sun Tran driver was also injured in an assault while on duty at Udall Park, further emphasizing the dangers faced by both passengers and employees of the transit system.
Most recently, an elderly man was attacked at a Sun Tran bus stop near Pantano and Stella on October 6, adding to the list of seriously violent incidents linked to the transit network.
These repeated violent occurrences have prompted the Tucson community to seek solutions for improving safety on public transit. As investigations continue, residents remain on edge, calling for increased security measures to protect those who rely on public transportation.
