Violence Erupts in Khatima Following Fatal Knife Attack; Police Crack Down on Unrest

Khatima, India — Tensions surged in this town of Uttarakhand after a tragic knife attack claimed the life of a 24-year-old man, igniting violent protests that disrupted the community over the weekend. The incident, which involved a clash between rival groups, resulted in significant unrest, prompting police to use force to restore order.

The stabbing occurred late Friday night when Tushar Sharma was allegedly attacked by a group of more than a dozen individuals near the Ashram Paddhati area. According to authorities, Tushar sustained severe injuries and was immediately rushed to a hospital but succumbed to his wounds shortly after arrival. Alongside him, two companions, Salman and Abhay, also suffered serious injuries and are currently undergoing treatment.

News of Tushar’s death spread quickly, inciting outrage among local residents. On Saturday morning, members of Hindu groups gathered at the roadways bus station, where they staged protests demanding justice. Their demonstration turned chaotic as some participants began vandalizing shops believed to be owned by non-Hindus, and a tea stall linked to the family of one of the alleged attackers was set ablaze.

In response to the escalating violence, senior police officials arrived on the scene and employed a lathicharge—using batons to disperse the crowd. Firefighters were called in to extinguish the flames from the burning stall, and additional police units have been deployed to the area to prevent further disturbances.

Local authorities are actively pursuing the suspects involved in the stabbing. Police confirmed the detention of two individuals, Hashim and Sameer, both from the nearby Islamnagar region. They are analyzing CCTV footage to identify other suspects, emphasizing a commitment to ensuring public safety and order. Khatima Circle Officer Vimal Rawat reassured the community that efforts to apprehend the remaining suspects would continue, along with strict measures against anyone attempting to incite further unrest.

Uttarakhand’s Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, who visited Khatima on the day prior to the incident, instructed law enforcement to prioritize swift action against those involved in the attack. Officials have characterized the violence as stemming from a longstanding conflict between rival groups, rather than a communal issue, which has often been a sensitive topic in the region.

Tushar, who had been married for around a year and worked for a local transport company, is mourned by his family and community. The ramifications of this incident underscore the fragile nature of security in the area, as local leaders call for calm and accountability amidst the turmoil.
