Nagpur, Maharashtra became the center of a political controversy following violent clashes that injured over 30 individuals. The situation escalated to the point where Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis accused the violence of being orchestrated, triggering a blame game between the government and the opposition.
In response to the unrest, a curfew was imposed in various areas of Nagpur after clashes broke out on Monday over a demand to relocate the tomb of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb from Maharashtra. The violence resulted in the detainment of over 60 rioters and the destruction of approximately 30 vehicles during a confrontation in the Mahal area of the city.
During a session in the Assembly addressing the Nagpur violence, Fadnavis expressed concerns about the involvement of Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal in the protests, highlighting the dissemination of rumors regarding the destruction of religious items. He emphasized the need to uphold law and order, condemning any acts of violence against the police.
Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Eknath Shinde, echoed Fadnavis’ sentiments by characterizing the violence as a “planned conspiracy”. He underscored the protestors’ allegiance to Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj and criticized those supporting Aurangzeb, urging them to delve into history for a better understanding.
Members of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) weighed in on the situation, with MLA Pravin Datke asserting that the clashes were premeditated. He detailed the sequence of events, alleging that the violence targeted specific Hindu establishments while implicating external influences in the unrest.
In response to the opposition’s critique, Congress leader Renuka Chowdhury presented a suspension notice in the Rajya Sabha highlighting the breakdown of communal harmony and law and order in Nagpur. On a similar note, Sena (UBT) leader Chaturvedi accused the Mahayuti government of inciting violence for political gains, diverting attention from pressing issues affecting the state.
As the political feud intensifies, the call for accountability grows louder. NCP-SCP leader Prashant Sudamrao Jagtap called for Fadnavis to resign from his position as Chief Minister, citing his failure to uphold peace and order in his hometown of Nagpur. The clash of perspectives underscores the complex web of political dynamics at play in Maharashtra’s tumultuous landscape.
