PILSEN, Ill. — Early Sunday morning, chaos erupted in a normally quiet alley of the Pilsen neighborhood, leaving residents shaken and mourning the loss of a familiar local figure known as “Pepe.” Witnesses described the scene as resembling a war zone when a party turned violent after an argument erupted between attendees and an unidentified assailant.
According to a preliminary police report, the altercation escalated when the two men involved asked the shooter to leave. In response, the individual drew a weapon and opened fire, leading to a chaotic exchange of gunfire among multiple shooters. Police recovered over 50 shell casings at the scene, indicating involvement from at least four different firearms.
Pepe, 46, often seen roaming the streets of Pilsen, was tragically caught in the crossfire. At approximately 1:40 a.m., he was shot multiple times in the neck and ankle while walking near the intersection of Wolcott Avenue and 17th Street. Emergency responders found him unresponsive and transported him to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
Authorities did not release Pepe’s full name pending notification of his next of kin. His death adds to the grim tally of gun violence over the Labor Day weekend, which left at least eight people dead and more than 50 injured across the city.
Two attendees of the party, aged 41 and 43, were also injured, each sustaining gunshot wounds to the leg. They were treated at Mount Sinai Hospital and are reported to be in stable condition. The shooter fled the scene immediately after the incident.
Police briefly detained another man who claimed to have engaged in a gunfight during the incident. This individual was found to possess a valid concealed carry license and was released without charges after questioning.
As investigators continue to search for leads, including reviewing surveillance footage, residents are mourning Pepe, who had become a beloved presence in the neighborhood. Gabriel, a local resident who saw Pepe frequently, remembered him as gentle and kind. “He was one of the sweetest guys, he would never harm anyone,” Gabriel said.
In response to Pepe’s tragic death, community members set up a memorial at the intersection where he was shot. Flowers, candles, and a photo of Pepe adorned a street pole, marking a somber tribute to a man who many residents had watched out for over the years. A GoFundMe page established to cover his funeral expenses raised nearly $9,000 before its closure.
Another resident, Claudia, shared her belief that Pepe had roots in the area and was not truly homeless, but simply enjoyed spending time outside. “He grew up here; I think he lived nearby. He wasn’t a danger to anyone. It’s very sad,” she said.
As the neighborhood processes this heart-wrenching incident, many residents express concern about safety.
