Agartala, India — Political tensions escalated in Tripura following a violent attack on a local leader linked to the Bharatiya Janata Party, which has raised concerns about safety and political rivalry in the region. The incident occurred in the Hirachhara tea garden area and left a BJP supporter, Chandan Das, critically injured.
The violence unfolded late on August 6, when a group of individuals allegedly associated with the Congress party targeted the home of Ashish Das, the BJP booth president. Reports suggest that the assault was not limited to the BJP leaders, with innocent family members and neighbors also caught in the chaos. Chandan Das sustained life-altering injuries, losing his eye due to an airgun shot during the assault.
BJP officials are demanding justice and accountability, prompting the Kailashahar BJP Mandal Committee to present a formal appeal to local law enforcement. The delegation, which included prominent party figures such as Mandal President Pritam Ghosh and State Committee member Nitish Dey, urged the District Superintendent of Police to take immediate action.
Dey characterized the attackers as being engaged in ongoing efforts to illegally seize land in the tea garden area, escalating tensions that culminated in the recent violence. The assailants were reported to be among those named in prior complaints to the authorities. The severity of Chandan Das’s injuries forced his transfer from local medical facilities to a hospital in Nepal for advanced treatment.
Despite the urgency communicated in the deputation submitted to the local police on August 11, party leaders expressed frustration over a lack of timely action, asserting that no significant progress had been made in apprehending the attackers within 24 hours. This lack of response compelled them to escalate their demands directly to the District Superintendent of Police, Sudhambika R.
Mandal President Pritam Ghosh expressed cautious optimism, relaying the police chief’s assurance that arrests would be forthcoming within a day. The attack has reverberated through the community, reigniting concerns over political violence and the safety of party workers.
As the investigation unfolds, the local political landscape remains fraught with tension, and the BJP continues to press for accountability, while the opposition faces scrutiny amid accusations of complicity in violent acts. The situation highlights the fraught nature of politics in Tripura, where rivalries often manifest in hostility, impacting the lives of ordinary citizens caught in the crossfire.
