2nd Ward Alderman Brian Hopkins, who chairs the Public Safety Committee, expressed his understanding of the unease among residents and workers in the area. Large groups of teenagers have been congregating near the AMC River East 21 Theaters, using social media to coordinate these gatherings, which have raised safety concerns.
Hopkins emphasized the need to address the criminal behavior exhibited by some teens, pointing to a recent incident where a couple was randomly attacked while walking home. The attackers did not rob the couple but viciously assaulted them, leaving the victims shaken and injured.
The Chicago Police Department reported that a 14-year-old boy and a 17-year-old girl were taken into custody for their involvement in the attack.
