Violent Fishing Assault Shocks Portland Waterfront Community

Portland, Oregon – A 73-year-old man was violently attacked while fishing on the Willamette River in downtown Portland, leaving his family deeply concerned for his safety.

The family of Xinmin Liang recounts how he was unexpectedly assaulted near the Steel Bridge while on a routine fishing trip along the Eastbank Esplanade. The attacker approached without warning, wielding a large stick which he used to repeatedly strike Xinmin, causing severe injuries including a concussion and a broken arm.

Despite the brutal assault, Xinmin managed to contact his wife and seek assistance, eventually making his way to the Central Library for help. However, his family notes with dismay that no one on the MAX transit offered aid during his journey.

Described as a white man in a gray outfit and a distinctive blue Willamette Week beanie, the attacker left behind a clue that Xinmin took with him to assist police in identifying the suspect. The family hopes that someone in the community may remember seeing the perpetrator and come forward with information.

In the aftermath of the assault, Xinmin is left traumatized and fearful of returning to his downtown residence. Concerned for the safety of others in the area, his family urges caution and vigilance, emphasizing the need to avoid isolated areas due to the perceived lack of safety in Portland.

As authorities investigate the incident as an assault rather than a bias crime, Xinmin and his loved ones remain anxious for justice and closure. They implore anyone with knowledge of the attack or potential surveillance footage to cooperate with law enforcement in apprehending the assailant.

In light of the disturbing nature of the attack, Xinmin’s family seeks to raise awareness about the importance of community vigilance and safety in public spaces, underlining the potential risks faced by individuals engaging in recreational activities like fishing along the river.
