PORTADOWN, Northern Ireland – A man from Lithuania with a significant history of criminal offenses has been sentenced to jail for a violent attack on his partner in Portadown. Rolandas Latonas, residing in Clonavon Avenue, appeared in Craigavon Crown Court and was convicted of grievous bodily harm and criminal damage resulting from an alcohol-induced incident in February of the previous year.
The 53-year-old received a three-year custodial sentence, with half of the term to be served on license. During the court proceedings, the Judge recounted the events that led to the arrest. Police responded to a domestic disturbance call at a residence in the Abercorn Park area of Portadown, where the victim reported a physical altercation with Latonas, her partner of seven years.
The victim recounted how the argument escalated, leading to Latonas throwing objects at her and eventually injuring her with broken glass. The police officers who arrived at the scene noted a significant wound on the victim’s side, which required six stitches at Craigavon Area Hospital. Additionally, the state of the kitchen indicated a violent confrontation had taken place.
Moreover, Judge McColgan highlighted Latonas’s criminal record in Lithuania, listing multiple offenses ranging from theft and fraud to more serious charges such as robbery, firearm possession, and drug trafficking. The defense counsel for Latonas mentioned that the toxic relationship dynamics fueled by excessive alcohol consumption contributed to the violent outburst.
In addition to the jail time, Latonas was issued a restraining order prohibiting contact with the victim for a period of five years. The sentencing aimed to protect the victim and hold Latonas accountable for his actions, underscoring the gravity of domestic violence incidents. The case serves as a reminder of the consequences of abusive behavior within relationships and the legal repercussions individuals face for such actions.
