Violent Newry Man Jailed for Two-Year Attack on Partner

NEWRY, Northern Ireland – A man from Newry has been sentenced to jail for subjecting his partner to a violent attack and imprisoning her in a bedroom for almost two days. Gerard Lennon, residing on Damolly Road, was convicted of false imprisonment, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, domestic abuse, and criminal damage in Newry Crown Court on Wednesday.

During the incident that occurred between January 13 and January 16 last year, Lennon dragged his girlfriend from her bed, repeatedly bit, kicked, and punched her. The victim, fearing for her life, suffered severe panic attacks as Lennon physically assaulted her. She was locked in a bedroom, experiencing threats such as Lennon threatening to shave her head with a razor.

The court heard that Lennon had a history of violence, with 27 previous convictions, at least 10 of which were related to violence, and not his first offense against a partner. Reports also highlighted Lennon’s struggles with alcohol addiction and limited empathy, contributing to his behavior.

As a result of the sustained and aggressive nature of the attack, Lennon was sentenced to two years in jail, with 12 months to be served behind bars and the other 12 months on license. Additionally, he received a three-year restraining order against the victim. The victim recounted ongoing struggles resulting from the attack, including trust issues and challenges in forming new relationships.

The judge emphasized the seriousness of the case, noting the attempts to dissuade the victim from reporting the incident as aggravating factors. Lennon’s actions have left a lasting impact on the victim, underscoring the importance of holding perpetrators of domestic violence accountable for their actions.
