STAYNER, Ontario – The Crown is pushing for a Wasaga Beach man to be labeled as a dangerous or long-term offender in the wake of a brutal sexual assault of an elderly woman inside her Stayner residence two years ago. Michael Zaakir, who had been charged with attempted murder and aggravated assault, recently admitted guilt to a charge of aggravated sexual assault stemming from the incident.
According to police reports from July 31, 2022, Zaakir, then 31, allegedly stabbed the senior and committed sexual assault before leaving her in critical condition and fleeing with her vehicle. The victim managed to crawl to her driveway for assistance, leading to authorities launching a manhunt for Zaakir.
After a few days, Zaakir was apprehended with the help of Bracebridge OPP. It was revealed that he has a history of criminal activity dating back over a decade. During a recent court session, the defense argued against the Crown’s application, claiming a missed deadline, although the Crown was granted an extension to pursue its case for Zaakir to undergo a forensic psychiatric assessment.
Since his arrest, Zaakir has remained in custody, awaiting his upcoming virtual court appearance from the Penetanguishene jail. The decision on whether he will be classified as a dangerous or long-term offender hinges on the results of the psychiatric evaluation. The unsettling nature of the crime has stirred conversations about safety and justice in the community, as residents demand accountability and protection for vulnerable individuals.
