TAMPA, FL — What began as a seemingly normal date in Tampa took a nightmarish turn when a woman was allegedly robbed and kidnapped at gunpoint by her companion. The incident, which unfolded late on Jan. 18 at a Motel 6, led to a rapid police response and subsequent arrest, highlighting the dangers that can lurk behind online connections.
The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office released gripping audio and body camera footage capturing the chilling moments after the attack. The footage shows a terrified woman frantically calling 911, pleading for help while hiding at the motel on E. Adamo Drive.
“Please, please, please, I need someone here right now,” she can be heard saying in the 911 call. Still on the phone with her date, she was trying to lure him away by pretending to retrieve money from her room, a clever ruse to buy herself time until the police arrived.
A dispatcher remained on the line, reassuring the woman that officers were en route while instructing her to remain quiet when she reported spotting the suspect nearby. The woman’s ordeal provides a harrowing glimpse into a situation where seconds can mean the difference between safety and peril.
Upon the officers’ arrival, the suspect had fled, leaving behind a traumatized woman. Body camera footage depicted her struggling to breathe as she recounted the terror of having a gun pointed at her while her valuables were stolen in the exchange.
According to her account, the evening started with an online match inviting her to spend time together. While sitting amicably in his car, the man abruptly turned the date into a robbery, demanding her possessions at gunpoint and taking her phone, keys, a watch, and even her hotel room key. With her phone still in his car, police managed to track the suspect.
In a reckless attempt to evade capture, he crashed into another vehicle. Authorities arrested 26-year-old Elijah Silva El-Shabazz, charging him with several serious offenses, including armed kidnapping, robbery with a firearm, and fentanyl trafficking.
“This was a terrifying ordeal for the victim, one no one should ever have to endure,” said Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister. He praised the victim’s bravery in calling for help and thanked deputies for their swift action in apprehending the perpetrator. “We are grateful she is safe.”
The case serves as a stark reminder of how quickly a routine interaction can escalate into a life-threatening situation and the importance of vigilance and rapid response in such critical moments.
