BAY CITY, MI – A Michigan mother, Jessica Marie Burke, is potentially facing life imprisonment following the death of her 4-year-old son, Noah Burke, due to severe malnutrition. Authorities allege the child was deprived of necessary nourishment, resulting in his tragic passing.
Early on the morning of October 18, 2024, Bay City Police were summoned to a home on McKinley Avenue following a distress call from Burke. She reported her son unresponsive and not breathing. Despite medical intervention, Noah was declared dead later that same day.
An autopsy determined that Noah died of “severe extreme calorie malnutrition” and associated complications, leading to his significant emaciation and eventual death. Prosecutors have charged Burke with felony first-degree child abuse, a charge that could see her imprisoned for life if convicted.
Noah’s health challenges were profound from birth. He suffered from Esophageal Dysphasia, a condition that severely hampered his swallowing abilities. According to court documents, this left him incapable of basic oral functions such as sucking, rooting, and gagging, making his care particularly demanding.
Bay County Prosecutor Michael P. Kanuszewski indicated the complexities of Noah’s condition posed significant care challenges. Initially weighing less than a quarter of the normal weight for his age, he required special attention, underscoring the critical nature of his needs.
While addressing the case’s nuances, Kanuszewski characterized it as exceedingly tragic, noting the difficulties faced in caregiving under such conditions. “She had her hands full,” he stated, emphasizing the daunting task Burke faced yet questioning how the situation reached such a dire point.
Burke’s recent court appearance culminated in her being held on a $250,000 cash-surety bond. Her next court date is set for May 29, where further proceedings will determine the course of this deeply sorrowful case.
