Decatur, Mississippi — A 50-year-old man has been charged following a disturbing incident over the weekend in which he allegedly assaulted his girlfriend, resulting in significant injuries. Christopher Quinton Bagwell was taken into custody on charges including simple assault and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, according to local law enforcement.
Authorities responded to a report of a domestic disturbance at a camper along Highway 485 on Saturday around 9:30 p.m. When deputies arrived on the scene, they were informed that the suspect might be armed with a shotgun. Upon attempting to make contact with Bagwell, deputies had to engage in a struggle to bring him into custody.
The victim, a 45-year-old woman, was discovered with severe injuries, including multiple missing teeth and other facial trauma, leading Neshoba County Sheriff Eric Clark to describe the attack as “violent.” Emergency medical services evaluated the victim, who ultimately declined transportation to a hospital for further treatment.
Investigators indicated that a significant amount of blood was found inside the camper, alongside the weapon believed to be used during the attack. Bagwell, while in custody, exhibited erratic behavior, reportedly shouting and damaging the interior of the patrol vehicle.
Initially charged with simple assault, a misdemeanor, investigators noted that this charge could be elevated to felony aggravated assault pending the outcome of the investigation. Bagwell’s criminal history includes a recent release from the Mississippi Department of Corrections, where he had been serving time for a DUI conviction.
Authorities are presently in the process of confirming Bagwell’s status with the corrections department, which could affect the legal proceedings regarding the new charges. Sheriff Clark emphasized the seriousness of the situation and the potential implications for Bagwell’s release status.
As this case develops, it highlights ongoing concerns surrounding domestic violence and the challenge law enforcement faces when responding to such volatile situations. The community remains alert as the investigation unfolds.
