Flint, Michigan – A man in Flint, Michigan, has been found guilty of committing a series of felonies in connection to a vicious assault on a woman in 2020. Derek Cordell Garner Sr., 57, was convicted by a Genesee County jury of six felonies, including assault by strangulation, domestic violence, sexual assault, and kidnapping. The victim, who was visiting from out of state and staying with Garner in Flint, was subjected to a harrowing ordeal that lasted for hours. Despite her attempts to escape, the victim was repeatedly attacked and prevented from leaving the residence.
In a desperate bid to seek help, the victim managed to flee from the house, running through neighboring yards in a state of undress while being pursued and assaulted by Garner. A concerned neighbor heard her cries for help and alerted the authorities, leading to Garner’s apprehension by law enforcement officers at the scene.
