Seattle – A 42-year-old man was taken into custody Friday morning for allegedly assaulting an elderly woman in downtown Seattle. The incident, which involved the use of a makeshift weapon, has sparked concerns about safety in the area.
At around midnight, the Seattle Police Department started receiving multiple reports of a man swinging a wooden stick embedded with metal screws near Third Avenue and James Street. Witnesses described the assailant’s actions as aggressive and alarming, prompting immediate police response.
Detective Eric Muñoz detailed the attack, stating the suspect approached a 75-year-old woman at a crosswalk and struck her in the face from behind. This unprovoked assault caused the victim to fall backward, sustaining serious facial injuries that left her bleeding heavily.
“This attack was a brazen act of violence against someone who was completely defenseless,” Muñoz emphasized, highlighting the severity of the situation. Bystanders quickly came to the woman’s aid, calling 911 as the assailant fled the scene.
Thanks to the vigilant efforts of an analyst in the Seattle Police Department’s Real Time Crime Center, law enforcement was able to track the suspect’s movement. Within five minutes of the attack, deputies from the King County Sheriff’s Office located the man and took him into custody without any further incident.
Following his detention, the individual was transferred to the Seattle Police Department’s custody. Officers reviewed footage captured by the surveillance systems, which contributed to the decision to arrest the suspect for first-degree assault. He was booked into the King County Jail, and the wooden weapon used in the attack was confiscated as evidence.
The victim received urgent medical attention at the scene and was subsequently transported to Harborview Medical Center, where she underwent emergency surgery for her injuries.
Authorities noted that the suspect is a convicted felon with a history of violent behavior, raising concerns about public safety. “This is someone who was already known to law enforcement for violent offenses, underscoring the need for vigilance in our communities,” Muñoz stated.
