Assault: Nevada Judge Attacked After Denying Defendant Probation

Las Vegas, Nevada – A Nevada judge was physically attacked in court after denying a defendant’s request for probation, as seen in a video from a Clark County district court. The defendant, Deobra Redden, was present in the Las Vegas courtroom for sentencing on a charge of attempted battery with substantial bodily harm.

During the hearing, Redden and his attorney appealed to Judge Mary Kay Holthus for probation instead of jail time, citing Redden’s efforts to improve his life with a new job and plans to continue his education. Despite this plea, Judge Holthus detailed Redden’s extensive criminal history in court, including multiple felonies, misdemeanors, domestic violence incidents, robberies, and attempted home invasion.

Following the judge’s decision to deny probation, Redden lashed out by shouting derogatory remarks and physically assaulting Judge Holthus, leaping over the bench and tackling her to the ground. While others in the courtroom intervened to restrain him, Redden continued his violent outburst by throwing punches and causing chaos.

Despite the attack, Judge Holthus managed to stand back up after several minutes on the ground, mentioning that she had hit her head. Chief Judge Jerry Wiese later confirmed that Holthus sustained injuries as a result of the incident, but returned to work the following day albeit feeling sore and stiff.

In response to the assault, the court expressed gratitude for the courageous actions of those who intervened and subdued the defendant. Security measures at the courthouse were reviewed and adjustments were planned to enhance safety. The incident was characterized as unique and unprecedented by Chief Judge Wiese, highlighting the need for increased security protocols to protect judicial staff, the public, and court employees.

While Redden faces additional charges related to the attack, including multiple counts of battery on a protected person, his next court appearance is scheduled for Tuesday. The district attorney’s office is currently reviewing evidence to pursue further charges against Redden in connection with the courtroom assault.
