Downpatrick, Northern Ireland — A 77-year-old parish priest was hospitalized after he was attacked while preparing for Sunday Mass. Canon John Murray suffered injuries to his head and hands during the violent incident on August 10, which left him in serious but stable condition.
According to reports, Canon Murray was assaulted inside the church on St Patrick’s Avenue shortly after a man approached him, requesting to participate in the sacrament of reconciliation. The assailant struck the priest in the head with a bottle before fleeing the scene, prompting a rapid response from authorities.
Local police stated that they are investigating the attack and have launched a murder inquiry regarding a related incident. A man was discovered dead in a residence in Downpatrick, and law enforcement officials suspect a connection between the two events. District Commander Superintendent Norman Haslett confirmed the death occurred around noon on the same day as the assault on Canon Murray.
“Detectives from our Major Investigation Team have initiated a murder investigation following the discovery of the deceased man,” Haslett stated. A 30-year-old suspect has been arrested and is currently assisting police with their inquiries.
Fr. Eddie McGee, a spokesperson for the Diocese of Down and Connor, expressed his concern for Canon Murray’s wellbeing. “He sustained a serious head injury and is receiving medical care,” McGee noted. “Our thoughts and prayers are with him during this difficult time.”
Canon Murray, who was expected to retire in the coming weeks, will continue serving in his parish until that transition occurs. Community members have expressed shock and concern over the attack, highlighting the priest’s dedication to his congregation.
“This type of violence is unacceptable in our community,” remarked a local resident, underscoring the outpouring of support for Canon Murray. “We stand with him and his family.”
As the investigation unfolds, the local diocese is coordinating with law enforcement to ensure that the perpetrator is held accountable. The police have urged anyone with information to come forward as they work to resolve both the assault on the priest and the subsequent murder investigation.
