Heroism Shines Through Grief as Family Remembers Officer David Rose, Fallen in CDC Shooting

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — A mother is mourning the loss of her son, a police officer who died in the line of duty while responding to a shooting at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Deveane Atkinson described Officer David Rose, who had a strong dedication to public service and a fearless nature when it came to protecting others.

At just 19, Rose shared his aspirations of joining the U.S. Marine Corps after graduating from Peachtree Ridge High School in Gwinnett County. His mother recalled his unwavering bravery, saying he was always willing to risk his life for others.

Following his military service, Rose fulfilled his dream of becoming a law enforcement officer. His career began with the Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office, and after a year, he moved to the DeKalb County Police Department. Throughout his career, Rose was not only dedicated to his job but also devoted to his family, including a wife and two young children, with a third on the way.

“At times like these, my heart breaks for his wife,” Atkinson noted, reflecting on the gravity of their loss. She mentioned that his wife is trying to cope, but the situation remains surreal and difficult for her.

On the day of the shooting, Rose was the first officer to respond, demonstrating his commitment to his duty. He was later pronounced dead at Emory University Hospital. The shooter was also killed, raising questions about the circumstances that led to such tragedy.

Atkinson expressed her anguish and disbelief, noting that she remains numb from the loss. “I can’t fathom why this happened to him of all people,” she said, struggling to understand the events that took place.

Despite her sorrow, Atkinson shared her gratitude for officers like her son, who risk their lives for public safety. “Knowing that there are courageous individuals out there willing to protect us makes this heartache a bit more bearable,” she stated.

As the community mourns Officer Rose’s tragic passing, his legacy of service and bravery is being honored, highlighting the risks law enforcement faces daily in their commitment to keeping the public safe.
