Assault Trial Begins for Boston School Principal Attacker at Henderson Upper Campus

BOSTON, Massachusetts – A woman accused of violently assaulting a Boston school principal three years ago has been deemed fit to stand trial, following a decision by a Massachusetts judge. Laurette LaRouge, who was 16 at the time of the incident and is now 19, faces charges related to the assault on the principal of the Dr. William W. Henderson Inclusion School in Dorchester in November 2021. The assault, which left the principal with serious injuries including a concussion, possible rib fracture, and facial swelling, took place during dismissal at the school’s Upper Campus.

Boston Public Schools Superintendent Brenda Cassellius highlighted the severity of the incident, noting that the assault occurred in a school setting. The 16-year-old’s mother had allegedly made threats against the principal the night before the assault, as detailed in a police report. After Judge Peter Coyne ruled LaRouge competent to stand trial, the Suffolk County District Attorney’s office confirmed her identity and mentioned a court clinician’s testimony on her competence.

A scheduled change-of-plea hearing for the case is set for March 29, shedding light on the legal proceedings ahead. The Dr. William W. Henderson Inclusion School caters to a diverse student population ranging from early childhood to Grade 12, providing an inclusive environment for students with various backgrounds and abilities. The school’s Henderson Upper Campus, located in Boston’s Dorchester neighborhood, serves as a space where students with and without disabilities learn together in general education classrooms.

The upcoming legal proceedings will determine the outcome of the case against LaRouge, offering closure to the school community affected by the assault. As the trial unfolds, the impact of the incident on school safety and the well-being of students and staff will continue to be a focal point of discussion. The Dr. William W. Henderson Inclusion School’s commitment to fostering an inclusive educational environment will also be under scrutiny, highlighting the need for maintaining a safe and supportive space for all students and staff members.
