DAVENTRY, ENGLAND – A man in Daventry, England has been sentenced to 39 weeks in jail for assaulting two police officers who were responding to a disturbance report in Chantelle Court. Anthony O’Brien, 40, attacked the officers in what authorities described as an unprovoked and violent assault on March 9.
The incident unfolded as officers from Northamptonshire Police arrived at the scene, where they encountered O’Brien and another individual who had sustained a head injury. Upon learning that O’Brien had allegedly struck the victim with a metal pole, the police arrested him on suspicion of assault.
As the arrest took place, O’Brien resisted and turned increasingly violent, biting and punching the officers in an attempt to escape. Subsequently, he was charged with two counts of assault by beating of an emergency worker and two counts of intentional strangulation.
Following O’Brien’s admission of guilt to the assault charges but denial of the strangulation offenses at Northampton Magistrates’ Court, his case was escalated to Crown Court. Ultimately, on June 21 at Northampton Crown Court, he was sentenced to a total of 39 weeks in prison for the assault charges against the emergency workers.
Expressing dissatisfaction with O’Brien’s actions, Daventry Response Sergeant Gary Walker emphasized that assaults on police officers carrying out their duties are completely unacceptable. He commended the decision to penalize O’Brien with a custodial sentence, highlighting the physical pain and emotional distress inflicted upon the officers.
Despite being acquitted of two counts of intentional strangulation as the prosecution provided no evidence for those charges, O’Brien’s violent behavior and its consequences were condemned by the law enforcement authorities. Walker affirmed the commitment to pursuing the strongest penalties for individuals who assault emergency workers, underscoring the gravity of such offenses.
