Assaultive Outburst in Nevada Courtroom After Judge Denies Probation Request

Las Vegas, Nevada – A Nevada judge was physically attacked in court after denying a defendant’s request for probation, according to video footage from a Clark County district court. Defendant Deobra Redden had appeared in court for sentencing on a charge of attempted battery with substantial bodily harm. Redden and his attorney requested probation for him, citing efforts to improve his life with a new job and plans to continue his education.

Judge Mary Kay Holthus, however, took note of Redden’s extensive criminal history, which included multiple felonies, misdemeanors, domestic violence incidents, robberies, and attempted home invasions. Despite his attorney’s belief in Redden’s ability to succeed on probation, Judge Holthus felt it was time for him to face a different consequence due to his past actions.

In a sudden turn of events, Redden reacted angrily, shouting expletives at the judge before physically attacking her. He leaped over the bench and tackled Holthus to the ground, prompting others in the courtroom to intervene and restrain him. Although the judge sustained injuries and required medical attention, she returned to work the following day, albeit feeling sore and stiff.

Chief Judge Jerry Wiese commended the swift actions of those who subdued the defendant, emphasizing the need to review and strengthen security protocols to safeguard the judiciary, the public, and court employees. Redden now faces multiple charges of battery on a protected person and battery in the aftermath of the courtroom incident. The district attorney’s office continues to investigate the case and plans to bring additional charges against Redden.

The court is taking steps to enhance security measures following the rare and unprecedented attack, working with security contractors to bolster protection within the courthouse premises. Reflecting on the incident, Chief Judge Wiese underscored the exceptional nature of the event, noting that such behavior had never been witnessed before in a judicial setting. Redden’s upcoming court appearance is scheduled for Tuesday, where further legal proceedings are expected to unfold.
