Islamabad, Pakistan – Pakistan summoned the Kyrgyz envoy to discuss the safety of international students, including Pakistanis, in Bishkek after a mob targeted hostels and residences of foreign students, resulting in multiple injuries. The Pakistani embassy advised the students to stay indoors until the situation de-escalated. Meanwhile, 140 stranded Pakistani students arrived in Lahore, with more expected to return on Sunday.
The violent incident stemmed from a fight between Kyrgyz and Egyptian students caught on video, sparking protests that led to the attacks on hostels housing numerous Pakistani and other international students. Unverified social media posts and footage highlighted the mob violence, prompting calls for immediate assistance to ensure the safety of the students. Four Pakistanis received first aid and were discharged, while one student remains under treatment for a jaw injury.
Pakistan’s ambassador to Kyrgyzstan reported that “local extremist elements” had targeted hostels and private residences, injuring several students. The embassy urged all Pakistani students in Bishkek to remain indoors until the situation normalized. The government of Pakistan emphasized its commitment to the safety and security of its nationals abroad and pledged to monitor the situation closely.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed concern over the violence and directed the ambassador to provide necessary support to the Pakistani students. He assured that the injured students would receive assistance and arrangements would be made for those who wished to return to Pakistan. The government offered to cover all expenses related to the students’ repatriation.
In response to the situation, Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and Kashmir Affairs Minister Amir Muqam are scheduled to visit Bishkek on a special flight to meet government officials, ensure medical care for the injured students, and discuss matters related to the students’ repatriation. The government remains committed to ensuring the well-being of Pakistani nationals abroad and will take all necessary measures to address the situation.
