Ahmedabad, Gujarat – Five foreign students studying at Gujarat University faced a terrifying ordeal when they were attacked during a late-night altercation at their hostel. The students, originating from Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, South Africa, and Sri Lanka, were reportedly targeted due to tensions surrounding their practice of offering namaz on campus.
Reports indicate that the students were peacefully engaging in their religious activities within their hostel rooms when a group of individuals confronted them, objecting to their practice and raising religious slogans. The situation quickly escalated into a violent confrontation, resulting in severe injuries to the foreign students.
The altercation took place at Block A of Gujarat University, where the students reside. Neerajkumar Badgujar, the additional commissioner of police (crime) for Ahmedabad city, confirmed that a police report has been filed in connection with the incident. Badgujar assured that the attackers will be apprehended promptly. One of the injured students remains hospitalized, while the others have been discharged after receiving medical treatment.
A witness from Afghanistan recounted the harrowing experience, describing how the attackers forcefully entered the hostel campus, disrupted religious activities, and resorted to physical violence. The attackers also reportedly ransacked the students’ rooms, causing damage to property and personal belongings.
Videos capturing the attack on the foreign students have circulated widely on social media platforms, drawing attention to the troubling incident. In addition to the injuries sustained by the students, several vehicles were damaged during the altercation.
In response to the incident, Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi has called for an urgent meeting with senior officials to address the matter. Gujarat University Vice-Chancellor Neerja Gupta was unavailable for comment, while the Gujarat University police station PI SR Bava stated that investigations are ongoing.
The injured students have been transferred to SVP Hospital for further medical care. The authorities are working to ensure the safety and well-being of all students at the university in light of this distressing event.
