Attack: Nevada Judge Assaulted in Court After Denying Probation Request

LAS VEGAS, NEVADA – A Nevada judge was physically assaulted in court on Wednesday after denying a defendant’s request for probation, as seen in video footage from a Clark County district court. Defendant Deobra Redden, facing sentencing on a charge of attempted battery with substantial bodily harm, appeared in a Las Vegas courtroom. During the hearing, Redden and his attorney asked Judge Mary Kay Holthus for probation, citing his efforts to turn his life around with a new job and plans to continue his education. However, after reviewing his criminal history in court, which included multiple felonies, misdemeanors, domestic violence incidents, robberies, and attempted home invasions, Judge Holthus denied the request for probation.

Prior to the assault, Redden shouted profanities at the judge and attacked her, resulting in a physical altercation that led to injuries for both parties. Despite the violent incident, Judge Holthus returned to work the following day but was reported to be sore and stiff. Chief Judge Jerry Wiese applauded those who intervened during the attack and mentioned that the court is reviewing security protocols to ensure the safety of judges, the public, and court employees.

Redden now faces multiple counts of battery on a protected person and battery, according to court records. He was scheduled to appear in court on Thursday but refused transport to the hearing. The district attorney’s office is currently reviewing evidence and plans to file additional charges related to the courtroom assault.

The assault on Judge Holthus has prompted the court to increase security measures, including the deployment of more guards and the assessment of further updates to enhance courtroom safety. Chief Judge Wiese emphasized the rarity of such an incident, noting that it was a unique situation unprecedented in their experience. Redden’s next court date is set for Tuesday, where further legal action is expected to be taken in response to his actions in the courtroom.
