Attack with Aluminum Bat in Maui Target Parking Lot Leads to Arrest and Calls for Increased Security

MAUI, Hawaii — A violent confrontation erupted in a Maui Target parking lot, prompting police to arrest a man accused of attacking another individual with an aluminum bat. The incident occurred last Friday evening, striking fear into bystanders and raising concerns about safety in retail environments.

The victim, who has chosen to remain unidentified, recounted the terrifying events that unfolded as he left the store with his girlfriend and her young daughter. He described how a man, later identified as 32-year-old Gabriel Pangkee, confronted them while wielding a bat and shouting accusations of familial wrongdoing. Witnesses reported seeing Pangkee remove his shirt and aggressively approach the trio.

Kiana Bascon, the victim’s girlfriend, quickly moved to protect her daughter while the assailant allegedly turned his fury towards her partner. A nearby witness described the scene, stating that the suspect delivered a series of ferocious blows that left the victim with significant injuries. The witness recalled, “It was over in seconds—a flurry of strikes that left the guy down.”

Authorities responded swiftly to the chaotic scene. Police later apprehended Pangkee, who faces charges including assault and criminal property damage. Records reveal that he has a troubled legal history, with multiple convictions, including a felony for burglary in 2018.

Following the assault, the victim suffered serious head injuries and extensive damage to his hands, which will require surgical intervention. Lacking health insurance, he faces daunting medical expenses that have raised concerns about his ability to provide for his family. Bascon emphasized, “He needs his hands to work and manage daily life. This is going to put a strain on everything.”

In light of the incident, Bascon is urging Target to take greater responsibility and improve security measures at their location. “This happened on their property; they need to ensure the safety of their customers,” she said.

A representative from Target expressed their commitment to safety and security. They extended thoughts and well-wishes to the victim and commended their team for their prompt response during the crisis. The spokesperson noted ongoing cooperation with law enforcement as the investigation continues.

Pangkee is set to appear in court on January 13, as legal proceedings unfold in the wake of this alarming incident. The attack has raised questions not only about personal safety at retail spaces but also about the broader implications of escalating violence in public areas.
