Roanoke, Virginia – Police officers in Roanoke shot and killed a man wielding an ax on Saturday, after a series of violent threats he made throughout the day. The incidents began in the morning when the suspect drove by the Roanoke Police Department, shouting threats at officers, and later made menacing calls to 911. Chief Scott Booth revealed that the situation escalated when the suspect damaged a police car and fled the scene.
Authorities managed to track down the suspect near the Valley View Mall area around 1:30 p.m. An officer followed the suspect’s vehicle, eventually leading to a traffic stop on Hershberger Road Northwest. Chief Booth reported that the suspect exited his vehicle and advanced towards officers while wielding an ax, prompting the officers to open fire and fatally shooting the suspect.
Following the shooting, officers provided aid at the scene until Roanoke Fire-EMS arrived. The suspect succumbed to his injuries on-site. The road was closed off for investigation from Ordway Drive to Ferncliff Avenue, as officers and state police began their inquiry. As per department policy, the officers involved were placed on administrative leave.
The identities of the officers involved in the shooting will be disclosed within 72 hours, while the name of the deceased is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
