Bar Shootout Leaves One Dead, IMPD Officer Injured in Indianapolis Chaos

Indianapolis, Indiana – A tragic incident unfolded outside a bar on the east side of Indianapolis, resulting in a man losing his life and several others sustaining injuries, including an off-duty IMPD officer. The shootout occurred in the early hours of the morning at the 1111 Bar & Grille.

Around 1:30 a.m. on Sunday, two off-duty IMPD officers were working security at the establishment and had to remove a patron following a dispute involving a woman inside the bar. As they were dealing with a separate medical emergency with an EMS crew, gunfire erupted in the parking lot.

Amidst the chaos, an officer and four other individuals were wounded in the shooting. One injured man was driven away from the scene in a blue Nissan, eventually arriving at Community East Hospital, where he was identified as Dominique Durham, 37, who unfortunately succumbed to his injuries.

The victim’s father, William Durham, expressed shock and disbelief upon receiving the news of his son’s tragic death. William also questioned the circumstances of how his son was transported from the scene to the hospital, emphasizing that it was a police shooting incident.

Detectives recovered a firearm from the scene, prompting further investigation into the events leading to the shooting. IMPD Chief Christopher Bailey addressed the media, highlighting the ongoing efforts to gather evidence, review surveillance footage and witness testimonies, and analyze recovered bullets.

Despite the efforts to uncover the truth behind the incident, Durham’s father expressed the pain of having to bury his own child. In response to the tragic event, IMPD has prohibited off-duty work at the specific bar and lounge where the shooting took place, citing concerns over public safety. The recent change in ownership at the establishment may have contributed to the decision to revoke the liquor license, a matter currently under appeal before the Indiana Alcohol and Tobacco Commission.
