Bodies of 5-year-old and 7-year-old New Jersey brothers strangled to death by their mom are discovered by their dad

HILLSBOROUGH, NJ – Lights were still glowing in the quiet neighborhood when tragedy struck a home on Piedmont Path Tuesday evening. Authorities say the peace was shattered after two boys, ages 5 and 7, were discovered lifeless inside their family’s residence, igniting a wave of grief across the community.

Investigators allege that the children’s mother, Priyatharsini Natarajan, 35, was responsible for their deaths. She was arrested at the scene following a 911 call placed by her husband, who had arrived home from work to the unthinkable and immediately alerted authorities.

According to officials, emergency crews rushed to the house after the distress call. Paramedics and police found the boys unresponsive and initiated lifesaving efforts, but those efforts proved unsuccessful. The children were declared dead inside the home.

Law enforcement detained Natarajan soon after their arrival. She was transported to the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office for further questioning before being formally charged. Authorities stated that the investigation is ongoing, but identified Natarajan as the individual who “caused the deaths” of her sons.

No additional information about the manner of the boys’ deaths was provided, and officials have withheld the identities of the children pending the completion of autopsies. The medical examiner is expected to perform thorough examinations to determine the precise cause and manner of their deaths.

Natarajan now faces two counts of first-degree murder and one count of possessing a weapon for an unlawful purpose. She is being held at the Somerset County Jail pending a court appearance regarding her detention.

The elementary school the boys attended, described as a tight-knit campus, was enveloped in mourning on Wednesday. Their absence was palpable at Sunnymead Elementary School, where staff mobilized crisis teams and counselors to comfort students and educators processing the loss.

Local officials have acknowledged the emotional toll this incident has exacted on the school community. Grief counselors were present before the first school bell to help children cope with their classmates’ absence.

Neighbors reported increased police activity late Tuesday and described the block as unsettled by the news. “It’s devastating,” one resident said, speaking anonymously, noting how the somber mood quickly spread throughout the quiet suburb.

Authorities have not released details regarding the events leading up to the tragedy or possible motives. The investigation is being led by the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office with assistance from local police departments.

As the case moves forward and the small town grapples with the immediate aftermath, officials have encouraged anyone in need of support to reach out to local mental health resources. Funeral arrangements for the boys have not yet been announced.
