Missouri woman stabbed to death by husband who thinks she’s cheating and says he had no other option

JEFFERSON CITY, MO – An 18-month-old girl is at the heart of a tragic case in which her mother was fatally stabbed inside their family home, a crime that has left a community mourning and broken a young family’s sense of security.

Authorities allege that Malang Jan Akbari, 46, killed his wife in their Jefferson City residence on January 12. Following the attack, police say Akbari fled with his toddler daughter, setting off an hours-long search as law enforcement rushed to ensure the child’s safety.

Police became aware of the situation shortly after noon when Akbari’s son received a call from his father, who told him he had killed his mother and left the house. Alarmed and desperate, the son rushed to the family home, where he found his mother lying on the kitchen floor, unresponsive and covered in blood. The young man’s search for his baby sister added to the family’s horror—she was nowhere in sight.

The disappearance triggered an Amber Alert for the toddler, prompting a multi-agency effort to locate the missing girl. Investigators quickly identified the family’s blue Honda Odyssey and tracked Akbari. The search ended safely for the child when officers discovered her at a relative’s home, where Akbari had reportedly dropped her off before fleeing. Meanwhile, authorities apprehended Akbari and took him into custody.

Court records indicate that when detectives questioned Akbari, he admitted to the fatal assault, explaining that an argument with his wife had spiraled into violence. Akbari allegedly detailed the sequence of events, saying he stabbed his wife, made her as comfortable as possible by placing a pillow under her head, and then picked up his daughter before leaving. Before his arrest, Akbari acknowledged calling several family members to confess to the crime and urge someone to check on his wife.

The victim’s name and further information about her are being withheld by authorities as the investigation continues. Her friends and family have described her as a dedicated mother who prioritized her children’s wellbeing and education, deeply valuing the opportunities their new life in Missouri offered.

Investigators are continuing their efforts to gather more details about the circumstances that led up to the tragedy. Meanwhile, child protective services are working to ensure the safety and care of the couple’s surviving children.

Akbari faces charges of first-degree murder, armed criminal action, and child endangerment. According to court documents, his defense has cited mental health concerns, referencing his background as a former Afghan Army member who reportedly suffered long-term psychological trauma. Nonetheless, legal proceedings are underway, with Akbari scheduled for a bond review on January 21 and a preliminary hearing on February 19.

Neighbors and loved ones have expressed shock and sadness, rallying support for the children who must now navigate life without their mother and amid ongoing legal upheaval. Community organizations have begun exploring ways to support the family in the difficult weeks ahead.

As the case moves through the court system, those affected by the loss are remembering the victim as a devoted mother whose focus was always on providing a safe and loving home for her children.
