MILWAUKEE, WI – A late-night house fire in Milwaukee has led police to uncover a devastating case of domestic violence that ended in the death of a pregnant mother of one, authorities said.
Police responded to a residence near the city’s north side late Monday, following a 911 call. Inside the charred bedroom, officers discovered the unresponsive body of 22-year-old Gladys Johnson, who was expecting her second child. Within an hour, law enforcement had detained a 21-year-old man described by officials as Johnson’s estranged boyfriend and the father of her three-year-old daughter.
Family members say the evening began like any other, but quickly descended into chaos. According to Johnson’s mother, the home filled with smoke late into the night. When she tried to reach her daughter’s room, she was allegedly confronted by the boyfriend, who stood in the doorway and prevented anyone from entering. In a harrowing moment, the man reportedly brandished a firearm and aimed it at Johnson’s sister before fleeing the scene.
Undeterred, Johnson’s mother managed to get inside her daughter’s bedroom. There, she extinguished the growing flames and attempted to rescue Gladys Johnson from further harm. Despite her efforts, paramedics pronounced Johnson dead at the scene. The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner indicated that Johnson had suffered traumatic injuries, adding that her death was classified as a homicide stemming from an assault.
Investigators believe that Johnson’s three-year-old daughter may have witnessed parts of the violence that unfolded, though authorities have not disclosed further details. Family members say Johnson was five months pregnant at the time of her death.
Police revealed that the suspect did not have a prior criminal record in Wisconsin. However, officials noted a documented history of domestic incidents between the couple, painting a grim picture of ongoing conflict that allegedly escalated to fatal violence.
Authorities launched a manhunt immediately following the incident, locating the suspect within 30 minutes of the initial emergency call. He was arrested without incident and transported to the Milwaukee County Jail.
Currently, the man faces potential charges including first-degree intentional homicide and arson. Investigators continue to gather evidence as prosecutors prepare formal criminal charges.
As the case unfolds, loved ones are left mourning the loss of two lives—Gladys Johnson and her unborn son. Police stress that support is available for families experiencing domestic violence, reminding residents that such tragedies are often preventable.
The investigation is ongoing as detectives work to determine the full sequence of events that led to this deadly encounter.
