Law enforcement in Gwinnett County, Georgia, is grappling with the aftermath of a deadly confrontation that left one officer dead and another critically wounded. The incident took place early Sunday morning at a Holiday Inn, approximately 25 miles from downtown Atlanta, while responding to a report of fraud.
The shooting unfolded around 7:30 a.m. when officers arrived at the hotel to investigate a potential forgery case. According to authorities, the officers were invited into a hotel room by the suspect, later identified as 35-year-old Kevin Andrews. Moments into their discussion, Andrews allegedly drew a handgun and opened fire on the officers, resulting in both being struck.
Master Police Officer David M. Reed remains in critical but stable condition, while Officer Senior Pradeep Tamang succumbed to his injuries. Tamang, a recent addition to the police force after relocating from Nepal, was engaged and had family members traveling from Pennsylvania to be with him during this tragic period.
Records indicate that Tamang joined the Gwinnett County Police Department last year, having graduated from the police academy earlier in 2022. Reed, who has been with the department since 2015, also graduated from his respective training program. At a press conference, Gwinnett County Police spokesperson J.D. McClure provided details on the unfolding situation, describing the suspect’s attack as unprovoked.
Andrews, the alleged shooter, received treatment for non-life-threatening injuries and will be taken into custody once discharged from the hospital.
