Bravery: Hastings Hero Receives National Honor for Life-Saving Intervention in Stabbing Incident

HASTINGS, New Zealand — In a remarkable display of courage, Junior Fa’amalosi Isaako intervened in a violent altercation that left one man critically injured. His brave actions, taken in June, have earned him recognition among the ten honorees at the upcoming New Zealand Bravery Awards.

While at home in the Flaxmere suburb of Hastings, Isaako was jolted awake by the sound of heated shouting. Peering outside, he witnessed a man attacking another individual, stabbing him repeatedly as a second assailant joined in, delivering brutal kicks and punches.

Without hesitation, Isaako rushed into the fray. He confronted the attackers, managing to deter one of them before tackling the armed assailant. In a dramatic struggle, he disarmed the attacker, forcefully hitting the man’s arm against the ground until the knife fell away. Once the threat was neutralized, Isaako quickly turned his attention to the wounded victim, dragging him to safety and applying a makeshift tourniquet with a towel.

As he applied pressure to the man’s injuries, Isaako called for emergency assistance, continuing to provide aid until police arrived. Thanks to his swift actions, the victim was stabilized and transported to Hawke’s Bay Hospital for further treatment.

Police arrested a 39-year-old man in connection with the attack, charging him with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. This suspect is set to appear in court later this month.

Isaako’s bravery will be honored during the New Zealand Bravery Awards ceremony, where he will receive the New Zealand Bravery Decoration. Among the other recipients is a 12-year-old boy who bravely helped save his father from severe injuries.

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon commended all award recipients, emphasizing their selflessness in the face of danger. “None of us know how we will react in such dire situations,” Luxon noted. “In these ten cases, these individuals placed their own safety aside to aid others, preventing further harm and saving lives.”

The bravery exhibited by Isaako and the other honorees underlines a profound sense of community spirit and resilience in challenging circumstances, showcasing the remarkable ability of individuals to step up when their fellow citizens are at risk.
