MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Minnesota Department of Public Safety (DPS) released new details about the deadly shooting in Burnsville, where Shannon Gooden fired at law enforcement, resulting in the deaths of two Burnsville police officers and a firefighter/paramedic.
The release from DPS indicated that officers responded to a call at Gooden’s home, where he claimed to be unarmed and refused to leave, stating he had children inside. After about three-and-a-half hours of negotiation, Gooden suddenly opened fire on the officers without warning. The shooting resulted in the injury of Burnsville police officers Matthew Ruge, Paul Elmstrand, and Adam Medlicott inside the home.
Gooden was hit in the leg after officers returned fire, but he continued to shoot at law enforcement from inside the home, eventually taking his own life. A large number of firearms and ammunition were recovered from the scene, raising questions about how Gooden, who had a previous felony assault conviction, was able to obtain the weapons used in the deadly shooting.
The new details released by the DPS shed light on the chaotic and tragic events that unfolded during the shooting. The circumstances surrounding Gooden’s access to firearms, despite his prior legal restrictions, bring attention to the issue of gun control and background checks. Additionally, the loss of the two police officers and firefighter/paramedic serves as a stark reminder of the dangers law enforcement and first responders face in the line of duty.
Authorities are now reviewing body camera and squad car camera footage to further investigate the events that led to the deadly shooting, as well as the officers’ use of force. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension has been tasked with determining if there are any charging recommendations for the Dakota County Attorney’s Office to review.
The tragic incident in Burnsville highlights the ongoing challenges and risks faced by law enforcement officers as they carry out their duty to protect and serve their communities. It also underscores the need for continued efforts to address the issue of gun violence and ensure that individuals with prior criminal convictions are unable to obtain firearms. The investigation into the events leading up to the shooting and the actions of law enforcement officers will provide further insight into the circumstances surrounding this devastating loss of life.
