SEATTLE — An 88-year-old woman is sharing her experience recovering from a brutal assault outside her Rainier Beach home that left her with serious injuries, including broken bones and loss of a finger. Emma Cotton described the violent encounter that occurred on October 13, two months ago, as shocking and swift.
Cotton recalls stepping onto her porch when an unidentified man suddenly attacked her, delivering punches to her face. In an emotional interview, she reflected on her ordeal, stating, “I turned around, and there he was. He just started hitting me.” The assailant, seen on surveillance footage from the neighborhood, reportedly targeted Cotton for her jewelry, including her wedding band.
“My life is far more valuable than those rings,” Cotton said, emphasizing her determination to survive. She managed to fight back even as the attacker continued to pull and bite at her hand to remove her jewelry. “He had my hand in his mouth, and I began scratching his face with my other hand. It was a desperate struggle,” she recounted.
Despite suffering significant trauma, including broken ribs and facial injuries, Cotton remained resilient. After the terrifying incident, she managed to contact emergency services for help. “I may have lost my voice from screaming, but I wasn’t going to just stand there and take it,” she stated.
As she continues to heal, Cotton draws strength from her faith and the support of her family and community. “The love I receive from those around me helps me stay focused,” she said. Her resolve has transformed into an unexpected capacity for forgiveness towards her attacker. “I hope he finds a better path and starts contributing to the community instead of harming others,” she said.
Remarkably, she has resumed her volunteer work at her church, demonstrating her determination not to be defined by the attack. “I won’t let this experience stop me from making a positive impact,” she stated.
The search for the suspect remains ongoing. Law enforcement officials are urging anyone with information to come forward. Crime Stoppers of Puget Sound is offering a reward for tips leading to an arrest, while local authorities continue their investigation.
Cotton’s story is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit, showing that even in the face of violence, love, community, and faith can provide the strength to heal and move forward.
