Anambra, Nigeria – The Triple Seal Global Initiative for Peace, a non-governmental organization, has strongly denounced the violent attack carried out by a group of suspected cybercriminals, commonly referred to as Yahoo Boys, on officers of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) traveling to Anambra from their zonal headquarters in Enugu. The incident, which resulted in the fatal shooting of an officer, occurred on Friday, as reported by the Peoples Gazette.
The President General of the organization, Comrade Joseph Chinedu Ezejiegu, expressed deep concern over the attack and emphasized the importance of continuing the fight against corruption in Nigeria. He highlighted the significant progress made in recovering stolen funds through anti-graft activities, such as whistleblowing, and stressed the need to prevent criminal elements from undermining these efforts.
Ezejiegu extended condolences to the family of the deceased officer and offered prayers for the wounded officer currently in critical condition. He described the attack as a blatant attempt to derail the EFCC’s anti-cybercrime initiatives and emphasized the importance of supporting and sustaining these efforts for the country’s socio-economic development.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the organization called on the EFCC to remain steadfast in its fight against cybercrime and to resist any form of intimidation or threats from criminal groups. The organization urged the commission to enhance its strategies for combating cybercrime and to continue its commendable efforts in safeguarding the country’s digital space.
The violent incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by law enforcement officers in Nigeria as they work to combat cybercriminal activities. It also underscores the need for increased vigilance and support for agencies like the EFCC in their efforts to uphold the rule of law and protect the country’s financial systems from criminal exploitation.
