Drive-By Shooting Duo Pleads Guilty in La Jolla Party Death Case

San Diego, California – Two men have admitted their involvement in a tragic drive-by shooting at a La Jolla house party that resulted in the death of a young woman and injuries to three others. Odyssey Sellers Carrillo, 23, and Malik Joshua Campbell, 24, have pleaded guilty to charges of voluntary manslaughter and other offenses related to the incident that occurred on June 23, 2019.

Nina Silver, a 20-year-old victim, was fatally shot while standing in an alley near Cuvier Street and Pearl Street. Although Silver was not the intended target, prosecutors suspect gang-related motives behind the 12:30 a.m. shooting. Carrillo, believed to be the shooter, led the attack from a light-colored sedan that drove past the victims, including a student athlete preparing for the upcoming fall season at Riverside Community College.

Initially facing murder charges and set for trial this week, Carrillo and Campbell decided to plead guilty instead. The two defendants are set to be sentenced in July, with Carrillo facing a possible 35-year prison term and Campbell 24 years. Carrillo’s guilty pleas include charges of attempted murder and assault with a semi-automatic firearm, while Campbell admitted to three assault counts.

Following the shooting, Carrillo was arrested in July 2019 after a high-speed police chase, while Campbell was taken into custody two months later. The tragic incident has left a lasting impact on the community and serves as a reminder of the consequences of senseless violence. The upcoming sentencing hearings will provide closure for the victims and their families, as justice is sought for the lives affected by this heartbreaking event.
